At St. Aidan’s, our intent is to cultivate a love for mathematics and inspire every child to achieve their full potential. We deliver a mastery approach that ensures all children develop a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts through a carefully sequenced curriculum. Maths is taught daily, using high-quality resources to make learning engaging, accessible, and relevant to real-life contexts. Our aim is to build confidence, curiosity, and resilience, helping children view challenges as opportunities for growth. Ultimately, we strive to equip every child with the skills and enthusiasm needed to succeed in mathematics and beyond.
To implement our vision for mathematics, Nursery and Reception children follow the White Rose scheme, which provides a solid foundation through playful, practical, and engaging activities. In Key Stages 1 and 2, the Power Maths scheme ensures a consistent, structured approach to mastering mathematical concepts. Lessons are taught daily, using high-quality resources that support visual, concrete, and abstract learning. Teachers adapt the schemes to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring progression and challenge for every child. This approach fosters confidence, curiosity, and a love of maths across the school.
Our primary school maths policy ensures that mathematical fluency is developed through a mastery approach, with KS1 pupils learning using techniques such as Rekenreks, while KS2 pupils continue to develop this mastery approach alongside building fluency by practicing their times tables at least four times per week, fostering confidence and competence in mathematics.
The impact of our mathematics curriculum is seen in confident, resilient learners who enjoy engaging with mathematical challenges. Through the Power Maths scheme in Key Stages 1 and 2, and the White Rose scheme in Nursery and Reception, children develop a deep understanding of key concepts and skills. Regular assessments ensure progress is tracked, enabling timely support and intervention where needed. By the end of their primary years, children are equipped with the problem-solving and reasoning skills essential for future learning. This consistent approach prepares all pupils to succeed in mathematics and apply their knowledge to the world around them.
