Writing

Reading keeps me calm, you can go anywhere in a book”.
Year 6 pupil.

Our vision for writing at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School, is to develop our children’s writing skills and a love of writing by exploring a range of different text-types through a variety of activities including drama and role play.

The intent for writing at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary school is to create a love of language and literature so our children can write across a range of text types, thinking about the impact their writing can have upon the reader, selecting sophisticated vocabulary and exciting sentence types for effect.

In EYFS we use EY2P, Early Years to Primary consultants, who work with staff to find and implement a range of high-quality texts catered specifically to our children. These texts are the basis for planned activities and experiences, which provide learning opportunities in Literacy. In KS1 and KS2 we have implemented ‘Ready Steady Write’ a comprehensive and evidence-based scheme that provides a sequenced, ambitious curriculum that places literature at its core. The units are carefully mapped out to match the entire statutory curriculum for writing. To support spelling we have implemented the ‘Spelling with Emile’ programme.

The impact of our dynamic and sequenced writing curriculum is to demonstrate progression in our learners. We measure impact daily, reflecting on whether a child has achieved standards against planned outcomes.

If a pupil has difficulty with writing; adaptations, adjustments and interventions can support knowledge and understanding. Any interventions that are necessary will be discussed with parents/carers and Individual targets sheets competed and reviewed if necessary. Interventions could include: Pre and post teaching, Teodorescu fine motor and handwriting, precision teach spelling, Phonics 1:1 and small group transcription.
