Our Space World
We have been reading the story ‘Whatever Next’. The children have been retelling the story focusing on the beginning, middle and end. We even had a picnic on the moon just like Baby Bear did in the story.
We really loved the story ‘Aliens love underpants’. Something amazing happened in our Nursery. We found aliens frozen in ice surrounded by underpants. We talked for a long time about what we think had happened. The children decided to melt the ice to meet the aliens. We tried smashing the ice, sprinkling salt on top, putting in the sunshine and putting hot water on top.
The children used the patterns from the underpants to explore 2D shapes. We made repeated patterns using circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.
what have we been up to?
We have little visitors in our Foundation Stage
Can you guess what they are?
Our tiny caterpillars have have transformed into beautiful butterflies. We are enjoying observing and feeding them before we release them outside in their natural environment.
Sport Relief 2016
We had a fantastic time in Nursery raising money for Sport Relief. We ran, hopped, jumped and skipped 1/4 mile on our school playground. We had lots of smiles and laughs as we learnt the Sports Relief dance. We also made our own obstacle courses in our Outdoor Area.
Understanding the World
We have been looking out for changes in the environment and the signs of Spring. We went for a walk around our school and used all of our senses to explore. We used our ears to listen to the birds (we even heard seagulls), we used our noses to smell the fragrant herbs growing in our vegetable patch.
The children would like to grow their own vegetables and herbs so watch this space!
Communication and Language
This half term we have been getting really messy! We have been exploring lots of sensory materials to develop our vocabulary which helps us to develop our language and communicate better (plus it was lots of fun!)
At St. Aidan’s we plan activities based on what the children are interested in. Over the last half term we have been reading lots of books written by the author Julia Donaldson. Some of the children especially enjoyed ‘The Scarecrows Wedding’ and began using the materials in the dressing up box to create their own wedding clothes attaching them with pegs. We made a bridal shop in our classroom to support this interest.
We would like to say a big ‘welcome’ to our new nursery boys and girls who have joined our class this year and a big ‘welcome back’ to our children from last year.
We have been busy getting to know each other and making new friends.
Nursery Sessions 2015/2016
At St. Aidan’s Nursery we offer the following patterns of attendance;
1) 5 mornings 8.30am-11.30am
2) 5 afternoons 12.30pm-3.30pm
3) 2.5 days Monday 8.30am-Wednesday 11.30am
4) 2.5 days Wednesday 12.30pm-Friday 3.30pm
Each child in our Foundation Stage has their own ‘My Space’ on the wall. This is to show all of your child’s achievements and next steps in learning. They have their own as every child is unique.
We have been busy filling them up!
In nursery we learn through play and believe that outdoors should be as much a part of a child’s learning environment as the indoor environment. When children explore the outdoors they learn from first-hand experiences, they will challenge themselves, become successful learners and develop into healthy, confident children.
Letters and Sounds
In Nursery we are working in Phase One for Letters and Sounds which focuses on developing children’s speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for phonic work which starts in Phase two. We are working very hard to develop our listening skills by going on Listening Walks and playing lots of games with instruments.
We have been learning all about ourselves by painting self portraits, recognising our names and talking about our emotions during circle time.
The Nursery children are learning all about Traditional Tales. We have been reading ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ and ‘Jack and the beanstalk’. We have been acting out the stories and joining in with the words!
