Year 2

Year 2 are soaring to new heights

with Mr Pennington and Mrs McCulloch

Welcome to year 2’s website page. Here you can see some pictures of different activities we have been involved in, curriculum maps, examples of work and much more.

This year your child will be given targets from Steps to Success. By the end of Year 2, your child will be expected to have achieved most, if not all, the steps. Below is a copy of the Steps to Success for Writing, Reading and Numeracy.

In Year 2 we enjoy celebrating work to be PROUD of! So as a class we decided to create a display were we could celebrate our work. Both Libby and Amy’s work have made the wall so far, please check back to see who else makes the wall this term.

Autumn 1 Half Term

This half term our class topic is all about animals. Below is a copy of our term’s curriculum map.

Curriculum Mapautumn-1

In Literacy so far the children have learnt how to write a recount about what they did at the weekend and they are using these skills when they write in Walter’s Diary. The children have also wrote a recount about a trip to Chester Zoo which they planned using a map of the Zoo.

We have now started reading ‘Giraffe’s Cant Dance’ by Giles Andreae and the children are really enjoying writing expanded noun phrases about the different animals in the story. The children will be writing a retell of the story and then finally plan and write their own version.

In science we have been learning all about Living Things and their Habitat and the children have enjoyed sorting animals into their correct habitats and explaining why they live there.

So far the children have enjoyed going on a minibeast hunt around our school, were they had to identify minibeast in their microhabitat and then collect the data and store it in a bar graph. Below are some pictures of the children and their completed graphs.

Spring Term

This term we have been learning about how to make our writing more exciting and have loved looking at a variety of stories such as ‘There’s A Tiger In The Garden’ and ‘The Pirates Next Door’. We have used these ideas to help us with our own writing and have written a description of a character using some of our brilliant costumes from World Book Day as inspiration.

We are looking forward to studying how to write a letter and will be using all we have learned about animals to help us fill our letters with as many interesting facts as we can.

Our numeracy lessons this term have started with us learning about both 2d and 3d shapes. We have been able to investigate these shapes in order to learn as much as we can about their features and help us to identify them both by their picture and how objects in real life can actually be certain shapes!

We have also been learning about how to tell time. We have used our own clocks to recognise the hours and minutes and have been working on quarter past, quarter to and half past.

In our science sessions we have been using what we have learned about animals and their habitats to take a look at the environment and how what we do has an impact on the world around use. We have learned about the three R’s of helping the environment: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and have come up with our own ideas about what we can do to make a difference.

We have learned about transport, investigating how different methods of transport have changed over the years to become the ones we recognise today.
